Where to stay in Dali? On our first trip to Dali, we preferred to stay in a Chinese Inn or B&B. We wanted to experience a temporary home-like stay during our Dali trip and took that opportunity to stay at a place rich in traditional architecture. After looking up several hotel booking websites, we found Dali Old Courtyard Boutique Inn.

Dali Old Courtyard Boutique Inn

Set in the heart of Dali’s old town, Dali Old Courtyard Boutique Inn is only a two-minute walk away from the city’s main pedestrian street — Fuxing Road, with plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops nearby.  This hotel is housed in a hundred-year-old Bai ethnic style building. The owner keeps the old structure of the architecture yet redecorated with modern hospitable equipment. It’s awe-inspiring how the details and the culture are well-maintained in this place. 

The check-in room is a great standing point to admire ancient Bai-styled architecture. It features a beautiful open-air courtyard, three buildings, and a giant wall. The great wall is the so-called “screen wall” or “shining wall” that faces the house entrance gate.

There are less than ten rooms to host the guests on the property. Some places are for a specific use — a tea ceremony room and a calligraphy writing room. We cannot help but stroll around the property after the check-in because there are too many details that caught our attention.

Double Room

We had a Double Room with a private bathroom on the second floor. The room was simple but adequate. We could find a wardrobe, two bathrobes, towels, electric kettles, a television, a fan, etc.

We were traveling to Dali during the summer with high temperatures. Even at night, it didn’t chill down. And staying in an ancient building without a proper air conditioner didn’t help us have a cold night’s sleep. But that’s the price to pay if you want to stay like your ancestors.

Suite Room

The Suite Room next door had not hosted any guests that day, so we got to take a peek at the room. It’s a room with a living room that can see the beautiful inner courtyard view. 

Traditional breakfast

As we included the breakfast in our room’s fee, we got the opportunity to taste the local Chinese breakfast in the morning at the backyard. There are two options for breakfast: Western and Chinese. Western breakfast serves you toastie, whereas Chinese breakfast offers you a tasty Yunnan MiXian, the famous rice noodles of Yunnan province. Both kinds come with fresh fruit or vegetables, yogurt, and eggs.

One last point that adds pleasure to our stay in Dali Old Courtyard Boutique Inn is that the hotel is relatively quiet in the evening, despite being only 100 meters away from the main street. We appreciated the calm and peaceful atmosphere after a long day of strolling around the city.
